I can keep a close eye on her while also getting school done with my big kids. I set out a large beach towel in our kitchen and put a container with a little bit of water on it. I then give her a few other containers to play with. Often times when we’re having a challenging day full of big feelings, temper tantrums, and lots of crying, I default to using water to change the tone of our home.
Squeezing little pipettes or droppers is great for strengthening little hands too. This way, the child can see that only 1 gummy bear is in front of number 1 so they would know the value of each number. While teaching them about different things that they encounter, it is also important to try to explain what it is or how it got there. For example, if you are visiting a museum, you can talk to them about the history of the artifacts. At that age, they are starting to notice a lot of things around them and will recognize the difference between things. Part of the process of learning also involves testing so make sure you also test the child here and there so you can make sure they actually know the words. Testing them will also condition them to be ready for more testing as they go through the education system. Start by showing them pictures of animals or objects they can recognize and have the word under the picture. Have them sound out the word and make sure they can pronounce it correctly before moving on. Here’s an activity you can do the next time you’re outside with your child. It is a beautiful activity that lets your children fall in love with nature. Draw the outlines of the individual parts on different paper plates. For example, if you plan to craft a bird, you can draw the face on one plate and its beaks on the other.
While the complexities of Jackson Pollock’s art may not get through to your little learner, it’s fun to recreate the famous artist’s work, toddler-style. Spread out a sheet of butcher paper and let your tot splatter away using different sizes of brushes. Are you looking for activities for 2-year-olds? Lie down and close your eyes – Get comfortable together somewhere, on the bed or couch or outside in the grass. Talk about what you did earlier in the day. Try a high-pitched squeaky voice, a deep low voice, a scooping drawl, sing it fast, sing it slow, etc.
Between 2 and 3, many children will be fully capable of using the toilet. Puzzles are a great activity for fine and visual motor skills (hand-eye coordination). Having to fit a piece into it’s correct spot by turning and manipulating it is great for visual-spatial awareness. The concept of one-to-one correspondence comes later, but many toddlers can get the idea early on. They’ll love coloring pictures, but getting them used to making marks will help improve their drawing and writing down the road. Print out pictures of their favorite characters or get a coloring book from their favorite tv show.
